The Science of Hemp
Taking a deep dive into investigating hemp as an agronomic and horticultural crop is something we love doing. Principles pertaining to industrial hemp as a field crop are continuously explored, including its cultivation, management, and harvesting of hemp for fiber and seed production. Many of our cultivation practices include irrigation, fertilization, integrated pest management, air circulation, and light control. These factors really influence and differentiate the quality and yield of hemp. Key insight as you begin to design your hemp farm for research or marketability will insure not only a successful outcome, but also the data to continuously improve the outcomes in the future.

Field Selection
Hemp is best preceded by legumes, barley, soybeans, potatoes, green manure or perennial alfalfa. Spice crops can impart their flavor into the hemp, so this is a consideration for hemp foods.

Disease Control
The good news with hemp is that it has very few disease and pest problems. A healthy disease management plan will provide you the lowest risk.

Harvest Protocol
Real time data and technology are at the epicenter of a successful harvest. There are different harvest protocols dedicated for the end outcome you are trying to achieve.

Storage
During harvest, the most critical factors to consider is preserving the integrity of the seed or flower and spoilage from rotting or mold due to high moisture content.

Processing
Conducting field trials with various hemp varieties of fiber & grain provides an incredible amount of data. Considerations for water quality, weather, soil & nutrient health are critical.
